American Sniper – Chris Kyle
Chris Kyle served four combat tours in Iraq as a U.S. Navy SEAL sniper and became one of the most decorated and controversial figures of the war.
American Sniper is his own account of those years, written with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. Kyle describes growing up in Texas, working as a ranch hand and rodeo rider, and entering the demanding world of SEAL training. He then recounts his deployments in Iraq, including the battles of Fallujah and Ramadi, where he provided overwatch for Marines and soldiers on the ground and earned a fearsome reputation among insurgents.
Kyle writes bluntly about the realities of combat, the bonds between members of his team, the loss of close friends and the strain that repeated deployments placed on his marriage. His wife, Taya, adds her own perspective in passages throughout the book, describing the fear and loneliness of waiting at home and the difficulty of reconnecting when he returned.
The memoir also follows Kyle’s life after leaving the Navy, as he struggled to adjust to civilian life and found new purpose in helping fellow veterans.
Direct, intense and often unsettling, American Sniper became a major bestseller and the basis for the acclaimed film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper.
It is a powerful read for those interested in military history, modern warfare and the personal costs of service. Please note that the book contains graphic descriptions of combat.
