Abundance – Peter H. Diamandis
Peter H. Diamandis, founder of the XPRIZE Foundation and cofounder of Singularity University, believes that humanity is on the verge of a period of unprecedented progress. Writing with journalist Steven Kotler in Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think, he argues that within a generation, technology could make it possible to provide clean water, nutritious food, affordable energy, quality education, excellent health care and greater freedom to every person on Earth.
The authors begin by explaining why so many people are pessimistic about the future: our brains evolved to pay attention to threats, and the media amplify bad news. Yet many measures of human well-being, from life expectancy to literacy, have improved dramatically over time.
Diamandis and Kotler identify four forces that they believe are driving progress toward abundance. Exponential technologies such as computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, synthetic biology and nanotechnology are becoming cheaper and more powerful. Do-it-yourself innovators are using these tools to tackle problems once reserved for large institutions. Wealthy technophilanthropists are investing in global challenges. And billions of people in developing countries, connected through mobile phones and the internet, are joining the global economy as consumers and inventors.
The book surveys promising innovations in water purification, agriculture, solar power, medicine and education, profiling entrepreneurs and projects working on each.
Optimistic and energizing, Abundance is a thought-provoking read for entrepreneurs, technologists and anyone concerned about the future. Its forecasts are deliberately optimistic, and some have proven slower to materialize than predicted.
