Animal Farm – George Orwell
George Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of the most famous books of the twentieth century, a short and powerful fable about power and its abuse. This edition, from the Penguin Readers series, presents the story in a graded, adapted version designed for learners of English, making Orwell’s classic accessible to students developing their reading skills.
The story takes place on Manor Farm, where the animals, inspired by the dream of the old boar Old Major, rise up against their cruel and neglectful owner, Mr. Jones, and drive him away. Renaming their home Animal Farm, they set out to build a society where all animals are equal and work for the common good, guided by the principles of Animalism.
At first, life on the farm improves. But the pigs, who are the cleverest animals, gradually take control. Led by the cunning Napoleon and supported by the persuasive Squealer, they change the rules, rewrite history, use fear and propaganda to silence dissent and drive out their rival Snowball. As the pigs grow more powerful, the other animals find themselves working harder for less, and the farm’s ideals are betrayed.
A satire of the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalin, the story remains a timeless warning about the corruption of power and the manipulation of language.
As a graded reader, this edition uses language adapted to the learner’s level and typically includes a glossary, background information and activities to support comprehension and discussion. Audio or online resources may not be included with pre-owned copies.
This Penguin Readers edition of Animal Farm is an excellent choice for English learners and teachers. Pre-owned copies may contain previous notes or completed exercises.
