Little Altars Everywhere – Rebecca Wells
In the small town of Thornton, Louisiana, the Walker family seems colorful and full of life. There is Vivi, the glamorous, unpredictable mother, and her husband Big Shep, a cotton farmer, along with their four children, Siddalee, Little Shep, Lulu and Baylor. Vivi and her lifelong friends, the irrepressible Ya-Yas, fill their days with parties, drinks, gossip and laughter.
Little Altars Everywhere, the first novel by Rebecca Wells, tells the story of the Walkers through a series of linked stories narrated by different members of the family and by people close to them. The first part is set in the early 1960s, when the children are young and their world is full of Catholic school, summer adventures, Southern food and family rituals, described with humor and warmth.
The second part moves forward to the adult years, as the narrators look back on their childhood. Beneath the charm and humor, darker truths emerge, including alcoholism, mental illness and abuse, and the lasting effects these have on each member of the family. The novel explores how love and pain can exist side by side, and how people find ways to heal.
Written in vivid, authentic voices full of Southern flavor, the book is both funny and heartbreaking. It introduced characters who later appeared in Wells’s bestselling Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
Little Altars Everywhere is a rich read for fans of Southern fiction and family stories. It contains depictions of alcoholism, child abuse and other mature themes.
