Sons of Fortune – Jeffrey Archer
On a single day in 1949, twin boys are born in a hospital in Connecticut. Through a deliberate deception, they are separated at birth: one is taken home by his parents, the Cartwrights, who believe their other son has died, while the second baby is given to the Davenports, a wealthy couple who have lost their own child. Neither family knows the truth.
Sons of Fortune, by Jeffrey Archer, follows the two brothers, Nat Cartwright and Fletcher Davenport, as they grow up unaware of each other’s existence. Nat, raised in a modest family, becomes a successful banker, while Fletcher, raised in privilege, becomes a lawyer and politician. Over the decades, their paths cross repeatedly at school, in love and in their careers, and they come into conflict without realizing that they are brothers.
The novel traces their lives against the backdrop of American history from the 1950s onward, including the Vietnam War era and changes in business and politics. Both men face triumphs, betrayals, personal tragedies and powerful enemies, including a ruthless rival who targets them both.
Eventually, the brothers find themselves competing for the same prize: the governorship of Connecticut. As the election approaches, the secret of their birth threatens to come to light, with dramatic consequences.
Archer, a master storyteller known for Kane and Abel, combines family saga, political drama and suspense with plenty of twists and turns.
Sons of Fortune is an entertaining, page-turning read for fans of family sagas and Jeffrey Archer’s fiction.
