Where The Crawdads Sing – Delia Owens
Deep in the marshlands of the North Carolina coast, a little girl named Kya watches as, one by one, the members of her family walk away from the shack they call home. Her mother leaves first, then her older siblings, and finally only Kya and her violent, drinking father remain, until he too disappears. At the age of ten, she is left to survive alone.
Where the Crawdads Sing, by wildlife scientist and author Delia Owens, follows Kya as she grows up in the wild, learning from the gulls, herons, insects and tides of the marsh. Shunned by the people of the nearby town of Barkley Cove, who call her the Marsh Girl, she learns to fend for herself, selling mussels to buy supplies and relying on the kindness of a few people, including Jumpin’, who runs the local fuel dock, and his wife, Mabel.
As a teenager, Kya meets Tate Walker, a gentle young man who teaches her to read and shares her fascination with nature. Later, she is drawn to Chase Andrews, the town’s charming former star quarterback. When Chase is found dead in the marsh in 1969, the townspeople’s long-held suspicions turn toward Kya, leading to a dramatic trial.
The novel weaves together Kya’s coming-of-age story and the murder mystery, with lyrical descriptions of the natural world drawn from Owens’s background in science. It explores loneliness, prejudice, survival and the longing for love and belonging.
Beautifully written and absorbing, Where The Crawdads Sing became one of the bestselling novels of its time and was adapted into a film. It deals with abandonment, abuse and violence, and contains some mature content.
