About Grace – Anthony Doerr
David Winkler is a hydrologist from Anchorage, Alaska, a quiet man fascinated by snow, ice and water. Since childhood, he has had a strange and frightening gift: sometimes he dreams of events before they happen, and his dreams come true.
About Grace, the first novel by Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See, tells Winkler’s story. After he falls in love with a married woman and starts a new life with her in Ohio, they have a baby daughter named Grace. Then Winkler begins to dream that Grace will drown while he tries to save her. Terrified that his dream will come true, he makes a desperate decision to leave his family and flee, hoping to prevent the tragedy.
He ends up on a small island in the Caribbean, where he lives for many years in exile, haunted by uncertainty about what became of his wife and daughter. He builds new relationships and finds meaning in helping others, but he never stops wondering whether his choice saved Grace or destroyed his family. Eventually, he returns to the United States to search for the truth.
Written in luminous prose and filled with vivid descriptions of nature, especially water in all its forms, the novel explores themes of fate, love, loss, guilt, memory and the possibility of redemption.
Haunting and beautifully written, About Grace is a rewarding read for fans of literary fiction and of Anthony Doerr’s work. It deals with grief and loss, which may be emotional for some readers.
