Eine Kurze Geschichte der Menschheit – Yuval Noah Harari
Eine Kurze Geschichte der Menschheit is the German-language edition of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, the international bestseller by Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari. In it, Harari tells the story of our species, Homo sapiens, from its modest beginnings in Africa to its dominance of the planet today, asking how and why we came to rule the world.
Harari organizes the story around three great revolutions. The Cognitive Revolution, around seventy thousand years ago, gave humans new abilities to think, communicate and, crucially, believe in shared fictions such as myths, gods, nations, money and laws, which allowed large numbers of strangers to cooperate. The Agricultural Revolution, about twelve thousand years ago, led to farming, permanent settlements and population growth, but Harari provocatively argues that it made life harder for many individuals. The Scientific Revolution, beginning around five hundred years ago, gave humans unprecedented power through the acknowledgment of ignorance and the pursuit of new knowledge.
Along the way, he explores the unification of humankind through empires, religions and money, the rise of capitalism and the role of imperialism, and asks whether all this progress has made people happier. He closes by considering how biotechnology and other technologies may transform humans in the future.
Bold, wide-ranging and thought-provoking, the book has been translated into many languages and read by millions. Some of its claims are debated by historians and scientists.
This edition is in German, making it ideal for German speakers and learners of the language at an advanced level.
