Full Catastrophe Living – Jon Kabat-Zinn
In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn, a molecular biologist and longtime meditation practitioner, founded a stress reduction clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. There he developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR, an eight-week program that teaches people to use mindfulness to cope with stress, pain and illness. Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness describes this program in detail so that readers can follow it on their own.
The title comes from a line in the novel Zorba the Greek, in which Zorba describes the whole of life, with all its joys and troubles, as the full catastrophe. Kabat-Zinn suggests that mindfulness, paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and without judgment, can help us embrace life as it is rather than struggling against it.
The book introduces the practices at the heart of MBSR, including the body scan, sitting meditation, mindful hatha yoga and walking meditation, and explains how to bring mindfulness into everyday activities. It then applies these practices to specific challenges, such as chronic pain, anxiety, panic, time pressure, work stress, relationships and illness. Kabat-Zinn draws on scientific research on stress and health and on stories of patients who completed the program.
The revised edition updates the research, which has grown enormously since the original publication.
Wise, compassionate and practical, Full Catastrophe Living is a foundational text of the mindfulness movement. It is a valuable complement to, but not a substitute for, medical and psychological care.
