Animal Farm – George Orwell
One night on Manor Farm, the animals gather in the barn to hear a dream shared by Old Major, a wise and respected boar. He speaks of a future in which animals are free from the tyranny of humans and enjoy the fruits of their own labor. Soon afterward, the animals rise up, drive out the drunken farmer Mr. Jones and take control of the farm, which they rename Animal Farm.
At first, the revolution seems a success. The animals work together under the principles of Animalism, summarized in seven commandments painted on the barn wall. But gradually, the pigs, led by the clever and ruthless Napoleon, take control. They rewrite the rules, silence opposition, drive out their rival Snowball and use propaganda and fear to maintain power, until the farm’s ideals are betrayed and the animals find themselves no better off than before.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a powerful allegory of the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism, and a timeless warning about the corruption of power, the manipulation of language and the dangers of totalitarianism. Its simple fable form makes its message accessible to readers of all ages, while its satire continues to resonate in politics around the world.
This educational edition, published by Heinemann for use in schools, is designed for students studying the novel and may include supporting material for classroom study.
A classic of English literature, Animal Farm is essential reading for students and adults alike, and a thought-provoking book to read and discuss.
