Red Moon – Benjamin Percy
In an alternate version of the United States, lycans, people infected with a prion disease that allows them to transform into wolves, have lived alongside humans for centuries. They are required to register with the government and take drugs that suppress their transformations, and they face widespread discrimination. Tensions are rising, and a violent lycan resistance movement has begun to strike back.
Red Moon, by Benjamin Percy, opens with a series of coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by lycans on airplanes. Patrick Gamble, a teenager flying to join his mother, is the only survivor of one of the attacks, and he becomes a reluctant national celebrity. At the same time, Claire Forrester, a young woman whose parents are killed by government agents, is forced to go on the run, discovering the truth about her family and her own identity.
As the country descends into crisis, with fear, propaganda and military crackdowns on one side and radicalization on the other, Patrick and Claire’s lives become intertwined with the conflict. The story also follows a politician who exploits anti-lycan sentiment for his own ambitions, and members of the resistance who see violence as their only option.
Percy uses the werewolf myth to explore themes of terrorism, prejudice, civil rights, surveillance, war and the nature of monstrousness, drawing parallels with real-world events and fears.
Dark, ambitious and suspenseful, Red Moon will appeal to readers of literary horror and speculative fiction. It contains graphic violence, gore and disturbing scenes.
