The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey

The aliens did not come with spaceships blazing across the sky in a single dramatic attack. Instead, they arrived in waves. The first wave knocked out power. The second brought massive tsunamis. The third was a deadly plague. The fourth wave turned humans against one another, because the enemy could look just like us. Now, the fifth wave is coming.

In The 5th Wave, the first book in Rick Yancey’s bestselling trilogy, sixteen-year-old Cassie Sullivan is one of the few survivors. Alone in the woods, armed and trusting no one, she is determined to keep her promise to rescue her little brother, Sammy, who was taken away by soldiers. Her journey becomes a desperate fight for survival in a world where anyone could be an enemy.

Along the way, Cassie meets Evan Walker, a mysterious young man who saves her life, but whose secrets may put her in even greater danger. Meanwhile, another storyline follows Ben Parish, a teenager recruited into a military training camp to fight the invaders, where he begins to suspect that nothing is quite as it seems.

Told from multiple perspectives, the novel combines science fiction, action, suspense and romance with thought-provoking questions about trust, humanity and what it means to survive.

Gripping and intense, The 5th Wave is a must-read for fans of young adult dystopian and science fiction, and was adapted into a feature film. It contains violence and intense scenes suited to teen and adult readers.
