The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – C.S. Lewis
Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are spending a dull holiday with their unpleasant cousin, Eustace Clarence Scrubb, when a painting of a ship on the bedroom wall suddenly comes to life. Water pours into the room, and the three children are swept into the sea of Narnia, where they are pulled aboard the Dawn Treader, the royal ship of King Caspian.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, one of C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, follows Caspian’s quest to sail east across unknown seas in search of seven lords, friends of his father who were banished by his wicked uncle. Aboard the ship is the valiant mouse Reepicheep, who dreams of sailing to the very end of the world to find Aslan’s country.
The voyage takes the travelers to a series of strange and magical islands. They encounter slave traders, a pool that turns everything to gold, invisible creatures, a magician’s book of spells, an island where dreams come true in terrifying ways, and a star who has come to rest on Earth. On one island, the selfish and complaining Eustace is transformed into a dragon, an experience that changes him profoundly when Aslan helps him become a boy again.
As the ship sails farther east, the sea grows sweeter and the light brighter, and the travelers approach the edge of the world, where Reepicheep must make his final choice.
Imaginative and episodic, with themes of courage, temptation, transformation and spiritual longing, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a beloved classic for children and families.
