The Well of Ascension

The Well of Ascension – Brandon Sanderson

The Lord Ruler, the immortal tyrant who ruled the Final Empire for a thousand years, is dead, overthrown by a band of rebels and a young street thief named Vin. But victory has brought new challenges. Without the Lord Ruler, the empire is falling apart, and the city of Luthadel is now in danger.

The Well of Ascension, the second book in Brandon Sanderson’s acclaimed Mistborn trilogy, follows Vin, now a powerful Mistborn, and Elend Venture, the idealistic young nobleman who has become king of Luthadel. Elend is determined to build a just government, but his new kingdom is besieged by three powerful armies, each led by a would-be ruler who wants to seize the city and the treasure rumored to be hidden there.

As Elend struggles to hold the city together through politics, diplomacy and alliances, Vin protects him from assassins and searches for a way to defeat the threats surrounding them. At the same time, the mists that cover the land at night are behaving strangely, and Vin begins to uncover ancient secrets about a legendary power known as the Well of Ascension. She also senses a mysterious presence in the mists and suspects that a spy has infiltrated their inner circle.

Sanderson combines intricate magic, political intrigue, battles and character development, building toward revelations that change the course of the series.

Epic and engaging, The Well of Ascension is a must-read for fans of Mistborn and epic fantasy, best read after The Final Empire. It contains fantasy violence.
