A Painted House – John Grisham
In September 1952, seven-year-old Luke Chandler lives with his parents and grandparents on a cotton farm in rural Arkansas. The family rents the land, and their fortunes depend entirely on bringing in the harvest before the autumn rains.
To pick the cotton, they hire hill people from the Ozarks and a group of migrant workers from Mexico, who camp on the farm for the season. For Luke, the arrival of the workers brings excitement and new friendships, but it also brings danger. Over the following weeks, he witnesses events that he cannot share with anyone, a violent secret, a hidden romance and the arrival of a new baby, and he is forced to grow up quickly as he struggles to understand the adult world around him.
Meanwhile, the family faces floods, money worries and the constant threat of losing everything, while dreaming of a better future, including painting their weathered farmhouse for the first time.
A Painted House is a departure from John Grisham’s famous legal thrillers. Inspired in part by his own childhood in Arkansas, it is a nostalgic, atmospheric coming-of-age novel that vividly captures rural Southern life in the early 1950s, with its hard work, faith, baseball and close-knit community.
Gentle yet gripping, the novel was adapted into a television film. It is a rewarding read for fans of Grisham and of literary fiction set in the American South.
