The Guardians – John Grisham
Twenty-two years ago, in the small town of Seabrook, Florida, a young lawyer named Keith Russo was shot dead at his desk. With no witnesses and few clues, the police focused on Quincy Miller, a young Black man who had been one of Russo’s clients. Miller was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, and he has been proclaiming his innocence ever since.
In The Guardians, John Grisham introduces Cullen Post, a lawyer and Episcopal minister who works for a tiny nonprofit, Guardian Ministries, dedicated to freeing innocent people from prison. With few resources and a modest salary, Post travels the South representing clients who have been wrongly convicted and forgotten by the system.
When Quincy Miller writes to Guardian Ministries asking for help, Post takes on his case. But as he begins to dig into the evidence, he discovers that Russo’s murder was part of something much bigger and more dangerous, involving powerful and ruthless people who would rather kill again than see the truth come out. Post must risk his own safety to uncover what really happened.
Inspired in part by the real work of organizations that fight wrongful convictions, the novel combines a suspenseful mystery with Grisham’s trademark insight into the legal system.
Compelling and suspenseful, The Guardians is a satisfying legal thriller for Grisham fans and anyone who enjoys stories of justice and perseverance. It contains violence and mature themes.
