A Divided Spy – Charles Cumming
Thomas Kell is a former officer of MI6, the British Secret Intelligence Service, who has been pushed out of the service and is struggling to find meaning in his life. He is haunted by the death of Rachel, the woman he loved, who was killed in an operation orchestrated by Russian intelligence. A Divided Spy, the third novel in Charles Cumming’s Thomas Kell series, follows Kell as he seeks to settle the score.
When MI6 asks Kell to help with a delicate operation, he sees a chance to take revenge on the Russian spy he holds responsible for Rachel’s death, Alexander Minasian, a senior officer of the Russian intelligence service. Kell devises a plan to lure Minasian into a trap and turn him into a defector, using all his skills of deception, patience and psychology.
But as the operation unfolds across Europe, Kell discovers that Minasian may know about something far more dangerous: a planned terrorist attack on British soil. Kell must decide whether to pursue his personal vendetta or to work with his enemy to prevent a catastrophe, and he finds himself caught between rival intelligence services, political pressures and his own conflicted motives.
Cumming, often compared with John le Carré, writes intelligent, realistic espionage fiction, with complex characters, moral ambiguity and authentic detail about the world of intelligence work.
A Divided Spy is a tense, sophisticated thriller for fans of spy fiction. It can be read on its own, though readers will appreciate the background from earlier books in the series. It contains violence.
