The Rule of Four – Ian Caldwell
At Princeton University, on the eve of Easter weekend, two graduating seniors, Tom Sullivan and Paul Harris, are close to solving a centuries-old mystery. Paul has devoted his studies to the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, a strange and beautifully illustrated book published in Venice in 1499, which scholars have long believed to contain hidden messages. Tom’s late father, a scholar, had also been obsessed with the book, and Tom has been helping Paul with his thesis.
The Rule of Four, by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason, follows the two friends as they decode the book’s secrets, which seem to point to a hidden treasure and the meaning of a Renaissance mystery. But others also want to uncover what the book conceals, and as the friends get closer to the truth, a researcher connected to the project is murdered, and they find themselves in danger.
The story is narrated by Tom, who is torn between his fascination with the puzzle, his loyalty to Paul, and his relationship with his girlfriend, Katie, who wants him to let go of the obsession that consumed his father. Along with their roommates, Gil and Charlie, the friends must navigate academic rivalries, campus traditions and their uncertain futures after graduation.
Combining a puzzle-filled thriller with a coming-of-age story and a vivid portrait of Princeton life, the novel explores friendship, obsession, love and the pull of the past.
Intelligent and atmospheric, The Rule of Four will appeal to readers who enjoy literary mysteries and historical puzzles. It contains some violence.
