Fever – Deon Meyer
A deadly virus has swept across the world, killing most of the human population. In South Africa, thirteen-year-old Nico Storm and his father, Willem, are among the few survivors. Traveling through a devastated landscape, they face hunger, danger and the threat of violent gangs, but Willem has a vision: to build a new community where survivors can live together in peace.
Fever, a novel by acclaimed South African crime writer Deon Meyer, tells the story of that community, called Amanzi, which the Storms found near a great dam in the heart of the country. As word spreads, people from many backgrounds arrive, bringing their skills, hopes and fears. Together, they struggle to rebuild society from scratch, facing questions about leadership, democracy, justice, faith and survival.
The story is narrated by Nico as an adult, looking back on those years and on the circumstances surrounding his father’s death, which he describes from the beginning as a murder. As the narrative unfolds, Nico grows from a boy into a young man trained in combat, and his relationship with his idealistic father becomes increasingly complex. Alongside the dangers from outside, the community faces internal conflicts, and the truth about the virus and his father’s death gradually emerges.
Combining post-apocalyptic adventure, coming-of-age story and mystery, the novel is both thrilling and thought-provoking, exploring what kind of society people would choose to build if given a second chance.
Gripping and ambitious, Fever is a compelling read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction and thrillers. It contains violence and mature themes, and is intended for adult readers.
