Sister – Rosamund Lupton
Beatrice Hemming is living a well-ordered life in New York when she receives a phone call from her mother: her younger sister, Tess, has gone missing in London. Bee immediately flies home, but before long, Tess’s body is found in an abandoned public toilet in Hyde Park. The police conclude that Tess, who had recently lost her newborn baby, took her own life.
Sister, the debut novel by Rosamund Lupton, follows Bee as she refuses to accept that explanation. The sisters were very different, Bee cautious and conventional and Tess free-spirited, artistic and impulsive, but they were extremely close, and Bee is convinced that Tess would never have taken her own life. Determined to find out what really happened, she begins her own investigation, uncovering details of Tess’s life in London that she knew nothing about.
Bee learns about Tess’s relationships, her art school, the father of her baby, and a clinical trial for a genetic treatment that Tess took part in during her pregnancy. As Bee digs deeper, she puts her own safety at risk and begins to question whether she knew her sister as well as she thought.
The novel is told in the form of a long letter that Bee writes to Tess, giving the story an intimate, emotional tone. Lupton combines a gripping psychological mystery with a moving exploration of sisterhood, grief and love, building toward a surprising conclusion.
Sister is a compelling read for fans of psychological suspense. It deals with death, grief, suicide and violence.
