The Housemaid – Freida McFadden
Millie Calloway is desperate. Recently released from prison and living in her car, she needs a job and a fresh start, but few employers are willing to give her a chance. So when the wealthy Nina Winchester hires her as a live-in housemaid after a brief interview, Millie can hardly believe her luck. She will live in a spacious home on Long Island, cook and clean for Nina, her handsome husband, Andrew, and their young daughter, Cece, and finally have a chance to rebuild her life.
The Housemaid, by Freida McFadden, soon reveals that the job is not what it seemed. Nina is unpredictable and cruel, constantly changing her instructions, making a mess and then blaming Millie, and accusing her of things she has not done. Millie’s room is a tiny space in the attic, and the door locks from the outside. Meanwhile, Andrew seems kind and sympathetic, and Millie begins to feel drawn to him, while wondering how he puts up with his wife.
As tensions in the house rise, Millie realizes that the Winchesters have dangerous secrets, and that nothing is as it appears. The story shifts perspective partway through, revealing a very different picture of what has been happening in the household.
With short chapters, dark humor and shocking twists, The Housemaid became a viral bestseller and the first in a series featuring Millie, and it was adapted into a film.
The Housemaid will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers and domestic suspense. It contains violence, abuse, captivity and disturbing themes that some readers may find upsetting.
