Anticancer – David Servan-Schreiber
When he was a young physician and neuroscientist, David Servan-Schreiber discovered by chance, during a research study, that he had a brain tumor. After undergoing conventional treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, he set out to learn what he himself could do, alongside medical care, to support his body and reduce the risk of the cancer returning. Anticancer: A New Way of Life is the result of that search.
Servan-Schreiber explains that everyone carries cancer cells in their body, but that the body also has natural defenses. He describes research on how lifestyle factors may influence the environment in which tumors develop, including inflammation, the immune system and the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors.
The book focuses on four areas. On diet, he discusses foods he considered helpful, such as vegetables, green tea, turmeric, berries, mushrooms and omega-3 fats, and those he advised limiting, such as refined sugar and certain fats. On the environment, he discusses reducing exposure to potential carcinogens in everyday products. He also addresses the role of physical activity and the importance of managing stress and emotional well-being, drawing on his background in psychiatry. Throughout, he shares his personal experience, including the recurrence of his cancer.
Hopeful and accessible, the book has been widely read. Readers should note that the author himself emphasized that these approaches are meant to complement, not replace, conventional medical treatment; that research has continued to evolve since publication; and that readers should consult their doctors before making changes related to cancer prevention or treatment.
