Angels and Demons – Dan Brown
Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to the CERN research facility in Switzerland, where a physicist has been murdered and branded with an ancient symbol: the word Illuminati, written as an ambigram that reads the same upside down. Langdon believed the Illuminati, a secret brotherhood of scientists persecuted by the Catholic Church centuries ago, had disappeared long ago. Now it seems they have returned.
Angels and Demons, the first novel featuring Robert Langdon, is set mostly in Rome and Vatican City. The murdered scientist and his adopted daughter, Vittoria Vetra, had created antimatter, an extraordinarily powerful substance, and a canister of it has been stolen and hidden somewhere in Vatican City, set to explode at midnight. At the same time, the College of Cardinals has gathered to elect a new pope, and the four leading candidates have been kidnapped, with threats that one will be murdered every hour.
Langdon and Vittoria race against time, following an ancient trail of clues known as the Path of Illumination, hidden in sculptures, churches and monuments across Rome, including works by the Baroque artist Bernini. Their quest takes them through famous landmarks and secret archives as they try to stop the killer and find the antimatter before it is too late.
Fast-paced and full of puzzles, codes, art history, science and religion, the novel explores the conflict and connections between faith and science.
Angels and Demons is an exciting thriller that will appeal to fans of mysteries and adventure. It is a work of fiction, and its claims about history and institutions should not be taken as fact. It contains violence.
