Kingdom of the Blind – Louise Penny
Kingdom of the Blind is the fourteenth novel in Louise Penny’s bestselling series featuring Armand Gamache, the thoughtful, principled head of the Sûreté du Québec, now suspended from duty while an investigation into his actions in the previous book continues.
One snowy day, Gamache receives a strange letter inviting him to an abandoned farmhouse outside the village of Three Pines. There he discovers that he has been named, along with his friend Myrna Landers, the bookseller, and a young builder, as an executor of the will of a woman he has never met: an elderly cleaning lady who referred to herself as the Baroness. The will is bizarre, leaving large sums of money that the woman does not seem to have had, and soon one of the heirs is found dead, turning the strange bequest into a murder investigation.
At the same time, Gamache is haunted by a dangerous decision he made months earlier, when he allowed a large shipment of a deadly opioid to slip through police hands in order to bring down a drug cartel. Now the drugs are on the streets of Montreal, and Gamache races to track them down before they cause a catastrophe. He is helped by Amelia Choquet, a troubled young cadet whom he has been mentoring, who has been expelled from the academy and is drawn into the city’s underworld.
Penny combines suspense, warmth and moral complexity, exploring loyalty, judgment, redemption and the consequences of difficult choices.
Kingdom of the Blind is a gripping installment for fans of the series, best enjoyed after reading earlier books. It contains violence and drug-related themes.
