Love & Respect – Emerson Eggerichs
Why do so many couples who love each other still end up in painful, repetitive arguments? Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, a pastor and relationship counselor, believes the answer lies in a simple but powerful insight. In Love and Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately Needs, he argues that, in general, wives most need to feel loved, while husbands most need to feel respected.
Drawing on his research and years of counseling married couples, as well as on biblical teaching, Eggerichs describes what he calls the Crazy Cycle. When a wife feels unloved, she may react in ways that her husband experiences as disrespectful; when he feels disrespected, he may react in ways that she experiences as unloving. The cycle can spin on and on, leaving both partners hurt and frustrated.
The book offers practical guidance for breaking this cycle. Eggerichs explains how couples can move into the Energizing Cycle, in which a husband’s love motivates his wife’s respect and her respect motivates his love. He presents practical principles for husbands on showing love and for wives on showing respect, with examples from everyday life. He also describes the Rewarded Cycle, in which partners love and respect each other regardless of the other’s response, out of their own faith.
Written from a Christian perspective, the book combines biblical insights with practical advice and stories from couples.
Love & Respect has become a popular resource for married couples, engaged couples and church groups seeking to improve communication and strengthen their marriages. It is not a substitute for professional help in situations of abuse or serious conflict.
