Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience – Mihály Csíkszentmihályi
A rock climber clinging to a sheer cliff, a surgeon absorbed in a complex operation, a musician lost in a performance and a factory worker finding a rhythm in a repetitive task may seem to have little in common. Yet psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi found that all of them can experience the same state of deep enjoyment and absorption, which he named flow. His classic book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience explains what this state is and how anyone can experience it more often.
Csíkszentmihályi argues that happiness is not something that simply happens to us, nor something money or pleasure can reliably buy. Instead, it comes from the way we direct our attention and shape our experiences. Flow occurs when we engage in activities with clear goals and immediate feedback, in which the challenge matches our skills, so that we are neither bored nor anxious. In these moments, we concentrate fully, lose self-consciousness and often lose track of time.
The book explores how flow can be found in many areas of life: physical activities and the senses, intellectual pursuits, work, relationships with family and friends, and even in difficult circumstances, where some people transform adversity into meaningful challenges. Csíkszentmihályi also discusses how to bring order to consciousness and how creating a unifying purpose can turn an entire life into a kind of flow experience.
Drawing on decades of research and examples from many cultures, Flow is a landmark of positive psychology and a thoughtful guide to living a more engaged and fulfilling life.
