Mindset – Carol Dweck

What separates people who keep growing, learning and achieving from those who stall or give up when things get hard? After decades of research, Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck found that a simple idea makes an enormous difference: the beliefs people hold about their own abilities. In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she explains how these beliefs shape our lives.

Dweck describes two basic mindsets. People with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence, talent and personality are fixed traits. As a result, they feel they must constantly prove themselves, avoid challenges that might reveal their limits, and see failure as a judgment of who they are. People with a growth mindset believe that abilities can be developed through effort, good strategies and help from others. They embrace challenges, persist through setbacks and see failure as an opportunity to learn.

The book shows how these mindsets play out in many areas of life, including school, sports, business, leadership, parenting, teaching and relationships. Dweck shares research findings and stories of athletes, executives, students and ordinary people, illustrating how mindsets influence motivation, resilience and achievement. She also explains how the way we praise children, for example praising effort and strategies rather than intelligence alone, can encourage a growth mindset.

Importantly, Dweck argues that mindsets can be changed, and she offers guidance on recognizing fixed-mindset thinking and developing a growth mindset over time.

Clear, practical and influential, Mindset is a valuable read for parents, teachers, coaches, managers and anyone who wants to reach their potential. Some aspects of mindset research have since been debated, and the author has clarified how the ideas are best applied.
